Heroin Storytelling: My First Time

In their own words, four former heroin users, in recovery share their personal story. Learn why they started using why they started using heroin and where it led them.

Immediately following the storytelling, Dr Joan Papp (Metro Health) and Judge Joan Synenberg (Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court) will join the storytellers in a round-table discussion on the topic of reaching those struggling with opioid addiction before it’s too late.

Dana Norris is a writer and the founder of Story Club, a monthly storytelling show that has been featured in Poets & Writers magazine. She is also the editor-in-chief of Story Club Magazine. Dana resides in the Cleveland area, where she writes for Role/Reboot and Cleveland Scene and teaches with Literary Cleveland and StoryStudio Chicago. She has been featured in the Chicago Reader, the Chicago Tribune, as well as on WBEZ and WCPN. In 2015, Dana was named one of Chicago’s top 50 literary influencers by New City Chicago.

Dr. Joan Papp: Dr. Joan Papp has practiced medicine for 17 years and specializes in Emergency Medicine. Papp is an Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and an attending physician at MetroHealth Medical Center. She spearheaded Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided by Naloxone) in 2013, which is a community based overdose education and Naloxone distribution program that helps provide free live-saving naloxone kits in 40 Ohio counties. Project DAWN is a community-based overdose education and naloxone distribution program. The participants receive training on: recognizing the signs and symptoms of overdose, distinguishing between different types of overdose, performing rescue breathing calling emergency medical services, and administering intranasal Naloxone. Judge Joan Synenberg: Judge Joan Synenberg presides over Recovery Court, a specialized docket, supervising people with drug addiction and trauma. This dual diagnosis docket is the first of its kind in the State of Ohio and is certified by the Ohio Supreme Court. Judge Synenberg has served on the Cuyahoga

County Court of Common Pleas bench for 10 years and previously served on the Cleveland Municipal Court for 2 years. She presided over the Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities Docket, Court of Common Pleas, from 2009-2014. Judge Synenberg is compassionate to those in need of legal advice. Under her leadership, hundreds of lawyers have participated in complimentary continuing legal education (CLE) courses, in exchange for donating their legal services to a person in need. She and her husband, Roger, live in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood.
